I spent a few hours mesmerized by the vintage record players, speakers, and amps that fill Stereo Discount on 279 Taunton Ave, just up the street from City Hall. The variety of high quality vintage audio equipment made me feel I stepped into a musical time machine. Simply put, you have to see -and listen- for yourself.
Stereo Discount sells new and used home theater and stereo equipment. They also service audio and video equipment. Record players are one of the most popular items. New and used players are around the store ready for you to spin your favorite record.
As I browsed the home theater equipment I was informed by multiple customers that despite looking at multiple stores, they only found what they were looking for at Stereo Discount. The variety of vintage gear that is available to the customers in the showroom is what makes Stereo Discount so unique. Authentic vintage speakers are available for a listen with their unique analog sound that is so pleasing to the ear. This is an experience you don’t find scrolling through used equipment on eBay.
Stereo Discount Audio and Video was founded by a graduate student from Brown University in 1977. The stereo store was bought and grew under the leadership of Jon Bell. It is currently owned and operated by Stu Powers. With ample on-street parking and a larger showroom, Stu couldn’t be more happy with the move to his hometown, East Providence. Stu keeps busy outside the store drumming in multiple bands including the Andy Lampert Band.
I appreciated Stu’s patience in explaining the vintage audio equipment to this millennial. Record players are making a comeback but don’t tell Stu they were ever out of style.
